What human studies say about ginger
- Menstrual pain · Meta-analysis, 12 studies · 2024
Ginger was associated with lower pain intensity (SMD -1.13) and shorter pain duration than placebo. It showed no significant difference from NSAIDs or exercise for pain intensity. Limitation: Heterogeneity for pain intensity was high (I2 = 81%), included studies had risk of bias, and safety data were infrequently reported. PubMed 38770631 - Chemotherapy-induced nausea · Meta-analysis, 23 studies · 2022
Overall, acute and delayed nausea and vomiting did not differ significantly between ginger and control groups. A subgroup taking 1 g/day or less for over four days had less acute vomiting (OR 0.30). Limitation: Clinical heterogeneity between trials required subgroup analyses, and the authors state that sufficiently large, high-quality RCTs are still needed. PubMed 36501010 - Blood pressure · Meta-analysis, 6 studies, 345 participants · 2019
Pooled analysis was associated with lower systolic (-6.36 mmHg) and diastolic (-2.12 mmHg) blood pressure compared with controls. Effects were significant only in subgroups with age 50 or under, 8 weeks or less, and doses of 3 g/day or more. Limitation: Few trials were included and heterogeneity was high (I2 = 89.8% for systolic pressure), so the authors say definitive conclusions are not yet possible. PubMed 30972845 - Broad clinical effects · Systematic review, 109 studies · 2020
Trials on nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, inflammation, metabolic syndrome, digestive function and colorectal cancer markers were consistently supportive, whereas other expected effects were relatively controversial. Limitation: Only 43 of 109 trials (39.4%) met the high-quality-evidence criterion; small populations and unstandardized outcome measures were common. PubMed 31935866
Most studies used extracts or doses that differ from home cooking. Full details in the Nourilo Research Library.
