Our story

Wholesome food, time-honoured wisdom

Nourilo is a growing library of 2,303 nourishing recipes — soups, herbal teas, congees and everyday dishes — drawn from generations of traditional Chinese home cooking and the gentle, centuries-old art of food therapy, and rewritten for the way we cook today.

A heritage worth keeping alive

Long before modern kitchens, families across China built their meals around a simple idea: that the right foods, eaten at the right times, help the body feel balanced and well. A clear soup simmered after a tiring week. A warming tea when the weather turns. A gentle congee for a delicate stomach. This is food therapy (食療) — wisdom passed down through countless home kitchens, refined over many generations of everyday use, and quietly trusted to this day.

It is a tradition that feels almost mysterious in its depth, yet it is wonderfully practical: ordinary, wholesome ingredients, brought together with intention. Nourilo exists to carry that heritage forward — to translate it faithfully, explain it honestly, and share it with curious home cooks everywhere.

Real food, really made

In an age of artificial everything, we made a promise: every recipe on Nourilo is genuinely cooked and photographed in a real kitchen. No AI-generated images. No stock photos. No invented dishes. What you see is what we actually made — so you know exactly what to expect when you make it too.

The story behind every bowl

We don't just tell you how to make a dish — we explain why these ingredients have traditionally been brought together. Each recipe describes the time-honoured thinking behind it in clear, honest language, using careful wording: foods are traditionally enjoyed, commonly associated with, or often turned to as part of a balanced, mindful diet. We share food, with the wisdom that surrounds it — not medicine.

Where our recipes come from

Recipes are adapted and translated from an established body of traditional Cantonese home-cooking and food-therapy writing, then carefully reorganised, clarified and quality-checked for an English-speaking audience. We work to keep the original ingredient wisdom intact while making every step easy to follow.
