Smoked Plum and Brown Sugar Drink
traditionally used to gently support women with constitutionally heavy periods through astringent and tonic properties
Why people make this drink
Heavy menstrual flow can have many causes — hormonal shifts, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and others — and persistent or severe cases always deserve a medical check-up. But for women who occasionally experience heavier flow due to a constitutionally deficient or weakened state, this simple smoked-plum drink offers a traditional first-line food-therapy approach. Smoked plum (wu mei) has a pronounced sour, astringent character that Chinese tradition associates with a “gathering and retaining” action, traditionally used to support the body in stopping various types of bleeding. Paired with warming brown sugar, the drink is both easy to make and pleasant to sip. Bro Niu also mentions two other traditional options: yi mu cao (motherwort) with red dates and millet for general constitutional weakness, or celery with day lily for cases where overheating or emotional stress may be a contributing factor.
Who it suits / who should be cautious
- Women with constitutionally weak patterns (tiredness, pale complexion) experiencing heavier-than-usual periods
- Can be taken during the menstrual period
- Not intended for heavy bleeding caused by confirmed fibroids, endometriosis, or structural issues — please see a doctor in those cases
- People who are sensitive to very sour foods should start with a smaller portion
Why these ingredients (the food-therapy logic)
- Smoked plum (wu mei): Intensely sour and astringent. Traditionally considered to consolidate qi, generate fluids, and support stopping of various bleeds. Also believed to soothe the digestive system and have mild anti-parasitic properties.
- Brown sugar (hong tang): Warming and blood-nourishing in the traditional framework. Its gentle sweetness tempers the sourness of wu mei and is itself a common ingredient in women’s health folk remedies.
Ingredients (about 3 cups)
| Ingredient | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Smoked plum (wu mei) | 6 pieces | Rinse |

Method
- Rinse the smoked plums briefly.
- Place in a pot with 4 bowls of water and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
- Add brown sugar to taste and stir until dissolved.
- Serve warm. Drink over the course of a day.
Bro Niu’s tips
Beyond women’s health, smoked-plum water has a broader range of traditional uses: it is said to ease digestive discomfort, relieve fatigue, and even serve as a gentle sober-up drink. Regular, moderate drinking of wu mei tea is associated with anti-fatigue properties — it is the base of the beloved Chinese summer drink suanmei tang (sweet-sour plum beverage). Keep servings moderate if you have a sensitive stomach, as the sourness can be stimulating.

Q (M): My period starts in about 7 days. I feel abdominal discomfort, tend to have heavy flow, and am quite tired. What can I drink now to ease cramps? Bro Niu: A simple option is to boil some ginger and brown sugar water — two cups a day helps warm the uterus and relieve cramps. Alternatively, cook 2 qian of mugwort (ai ye) with brown sugar and 3 slices of ginger as a tea.
