Congee & Porridge
Hyacinth Bean, Lotus Seed and Job's Tears Congee
Traditionally strengthens digestion and supports gentle drainage
Why people make this congee
Bro Niu starts with a reminder that breakfast matters: skipping it for years lets bile sit and thicken, which over time can favor stone formation. So good habits come first — don’t go too long on an empty stomach, and go easy on sugar, fat and unclean foods. This congee is his gentle companion for the stable phase of gallstones: it is traditionally said to strengthen the digestion and support gentle drainage, easing the upper-belly fullness and tightness that can linger.
Who it suits / who should be cautious
- People in the stable, pain-free phase of gallstones; also those with weak digestion, poor appetite or loose stools.
- For children, halve the amounts. This is not for an acute, painful attack. If a stone blocks the bile duct or pain is severe, see a doctor.
Why these ingredients (the food-therapy logic)
- Hyacinth bean (chao bian dou): Traditionally strengthens the spleen and dispels dampness.
- Lotus seed (lian zi): Traditionally strengthens the spleen and settles the digestion.
- Job’s tears (yi mi): Traditionally promotes urination and drains dampness.
- Red dates and tangerine peel (hong zao, chen pi): Traditionally harmonize the stomach and add gentle warmth and aroma.
Ingredients (3–4 bowls)
| Ingredient | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stir-fried hyacinth bean | ~1 tael (38 g) | Rinse and soak |
| Lotus seeds | ~1 tael (38 g) | Rinse and soak |
| Job’s tears | ~2 tael (75 g) | Rinse and soak |
| Red dates | 8 | |
| Dried tangerine peel | 3 pieces | Add from cold water |
| White rice | as needed |
Method
- Rinse and soak the beans, lotus seeds, Job’s tears, dates, tangerine peel and rice.
- Add 8 bowls of water and cook for about 2 hours down to 3–4 bowls of congee.
- Serve warm.
Bro Niu’s tips
This congee also suits people with weak digestion, poor appetite or diarrhea. Halve the amounts for children. Remember the bigger lesson: eat breakfast, don’t fast too long, and go easy on fat and sugar.
Community questions answered (selected)
-
Q (Man): I just found a gallstone under 1 cm. Is there a food approach to keep it from growing, so I can avoid surgery? Bro Niu: Freshly pressed apple juice or fresh pumpkin juice is traditionally said to help with gallstones — but it must be drunk within 5 minutes of pressing to have any effect; bottled supermarket juice doesn’t work.
-
Q (May): When pressing the apple juice, do I keep the skin on? Bro Niu: It’s best to peel the apple first, since the skin can carry wax and pesticide residue.
-
Q (Stella): Should the hyacinth bean and Job’s tears congee be eaten daily until I recover? Bro Niu: You can eat it daily; about a week is fine.
