Why people make this porridge

While visiting a relative in a care home, Nourilo noticed that many of the elderly residents were extremely thin. Many were ill or unable to care for themselves, and their digestive function and appetite were poor. Although institutional meals may provide adequate nutrition, repetitive dishes may not be very appealing. Visits from family can therefore matter, especially when someone is there to encourage and personally help an older relative eat.

As digestion often becomes weaker with age, Nourilo suggests making millet porridge more often. Millet is traditionally valued for supporting the spleen and stomach, and cooking it with foods an older person enjoys can make the meal more appealing and easier to eat.
