Ginger & Pear Water with Honey
Traditionally used to warm the stomach, relieve cough, and soothe respiratory inflammation
Why people make this drink
This simple two-ingredient drink has a long track record in Chinese home kitchens for easing a ticklish throat or a cold-induced cough. Snow pear (xue li) has been used for centuries to moisten the lungs and generate fluids; ginger is warming and helps the body clear cold. Together they offer a balanced approach — the pear moderates ginger’s heat, the ginger counters pear’s cooling energy. Ginger also contains gingerols and other phenolic and flavonoid compounds, and modern research has found that these reduce levels of cyclo-oxygenase (an enzyme involved in inflammation) — giving this traditional pairing genuine scientific grounding.
Who it suits / who should be cautious
- Suitable for adults and children dealing with a cough triggered by cold exposure, mild throat irritation, or early-stage upper respiratory discomfort.
- People with chronic intestinal inflammation can also drink this.
- Honey must not be added until the drink has cooled to below 40°C, as high heat degrades honey’s beneficial compounds.
- Children under 1 year of age should not consume honey.
- Those with a heat-type cough (yellow-green phlegm, sore throat, fever) should use this cautiously — the warming ginger is more suited to cold-type or dry coughs.
Why these ingredients (the food-therapy logic)
- Ginger (sheng jiang): Warm and pungent in nature; traditionally used to expel cold, warm the stomach, relieve nausea, and loosen phlegm. Gingerols and shogaols are bioactive compounds with well-documented anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in modern research.
- Snow pear (xue li): Sweet and cool; traditionally prized for generating body fluids, moistening the lungs, and relieving cough. Pairs beautifully with warming ginger to create a balanced formula.
- Honey (feng mi): Gently soothes the throat, adds natural sweetness, and brings mild antibacterial properties. Always add after the drink has cooled slightly.
Ingredients (about 2 cups)
| Ingredient | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh ginger | 6–7 slices | No need to peel |
| Snow pear (Asian pear) | 1 piece | Leave skin on, remove core, cut into chunks |
| Raw honey | A small drizzle | Add once drink has cooled to below 40°C |
Method
- Wash the snow pear, leaving the skin on. Remove the core and cut into chunks.
- Combine the ginger slices and pear chunks in a pot with 4 bowls of water.
- Bring to a boil, then simmer for 20 minutes.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool until just warm (below 40°C).
- Stir in a small amount of honey and serve.
Bro Niu’s tips
Drink this warm, 2–3 days in a row is usually sufficient to ease a cold-type or dry cough. Keeping the pear skin on adds extra fibre and flavour. Do not add honey to a boiling or very hot drink — let it cool first. If your cough is accompanied by a sore throat and yellowish phlegm, it may be a heat-type cough; consult your practitioner or doctor for appropriate guidance.

Q (匿名 reader): My son is 40 and has started getting dark spots on his face and a few dark moles near his ears. Could this be a liver problem? He sleeps late and eats a lot of “heaty” foods. What soup can I make to help detoxify him? Bro Niu: Brownish spots on the face — known as chloasma — are usually associated with the liver not clearing toxins efficiently, or with liver qi stagnation. You can make a tea with capillaris (yin chen) 5 qian, chicken-bone grass (ji gu cao) 1 liang, and honey dates 3 pieces, simmered to drink. If the dark spots are moles that are enlarging, please see a doctor. The liver’s detox window is 11pm–1am; chronic late nights prevent it from doing its job, and toxins can show up on the skin.
