Honeysuckle Tea

Why people make this tea

Bro Niu shared this during a scarlet-fever scare, when parents were anxious to keep little ones well. Honeysuckle tea is a long-loved kitchen tea associated with clearing heat. The nicest part is the flavor: it is naturally sweet and pleasant, so children rarely turn it down. It is meant as gentle daily support, not a substitute for medical care.

Who it suits / who should be cautious

  • Families wanting a mild, sweet cooling tea in cold-and-flu season; the whole family can drink it.
  • Honeysuckle is cooling, so 2–3 servings a week is plenty; you can leave the sugar out.
  • Anyone with a weak, cold stomach or G6PD-related concerns should be cautious; if a child develops a rash after drinking it, stop.

Why these ingredients (the food-therapy logic)

  • Honeysuckle flower (jin yin hua): a classic cooling flower tea traditionally used to clear heat and ease a hot, sore throat.
  • White sugar (bai tang): softens the flavor so children accept it.

Method

  1. Put the honeysuckle in a pot and rinse once with boiling water.
  2. Add fresh boiling water and steep, covered, for 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in sugar to taste. You can keep topping up with water until the flavor fades.

Bro Niu’s tips

This tea is traditionally enjoyed to soothe a sore throat. For a four-person batch use about half a tael (around 18 g) and simmer it gently for 10 minutes instead of steeping.

Community questions answered (selected)

  • Q (Niki): Where do I buy honeysuckle, can I drink it daily, and is it okay without sugar? Bro Niu: It is sold at Chinese herb shops. Because it is a cooling flower tea, 3 servings a week is enough. Yes, you can skip the sugar.
  • Q (Agnes): Can a baby drink this? Bro Niu: As long as the baby does not have G6PD deficiency (favism), it is fine.
  • Q (Watermelon): After drinking honeysuckle tea I got a stomachache — what can I add to help? Bro Niu: Try steeping it with two or three slices of honey-fried licorice (zhi gan cao), which is warming and supportive. Best taken after meals.
